Asst. Principal, Gerrol Johnson celebrated Black History Month by taking part in the National African-American Read-In (NAARI). NAARI is sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and endorsed by the International Reading Association. NAARI wants to document readers making the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. The overall goal of the annual Read-In is to promote literature that has been written and/or illustrated by Black Americans and also bring everyone together by reading and learning.
It’s Go Texan Day in Houston and HISD!
Each year, HISD employees, students and their families enjoy the agricultural advancements, educational programs, world-class entertainment, and western heritage exhibits brought to the city by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. To kick off the 2012 Rodeo, Houston will celebrate "Go Texan Day" on Friday, February 22.
In recognition of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's many years of dedicated service to the youth of Texas and HISD students in particular, employees are encouraged to show support for the Rodeo by dressing in western attire on "Go Texan Day."
Since 1957, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has awarded millions of dollars to Texas students for their education. In 2012 alone, the Show awarded scholarships worth $1,648,000 to 103 HISD graduates. In addition, the Rodeo Institute for Teacher Excellence has supported the district's efforts to increase student achievement.
Go Texan!
