Leadership Houston Honors HISD for Real Men Read Program
HISD became one of only ten organizations chosen this year to receive Leadership Houston’s “Leadership in Action” award for 2009.
The awards are presented annually to nonprofit organizations and corporations that have made extraordinary contributions through their programs and projects toward the betterment of life in the greater Houston Area.
HISD was recognized for its “Houston Real Men Read” mentoring initiative, which was chaired by Texas Senator Rodney Ellis and spearheaded by HISD Board of Education member Paula M. Harris.
“We are so excited to receive this award from Leadership Houston,” said Harris. “The success of this program and the gains made by the district this year once again verify importance of community volunteers, community support, and community recognition for our students. The Real Men Read program reaffirms to our students that the community cares about them and that hard work always equal success.”
“Leadership Houston is proud to honor the recipients of the 2009 Leadership in Action Awards,” added Leadership in Action Awards Chairperson Laurie Bricker. “Each collaborative project was truly inspirational.”
District representatives accepted the award during a special luncheon ceremony held on June 24, at the River Oaks Country Club. For a full list of this year’s winners, please visit the Leadership Houston Web site.
