Jeremy Jenkins, a junior at HISD's Ross Sterling High School, became the latest in a series of Sterling students to take to the skies recently when he obtained his pilot's license while still in the Magnet School of Aviation there.

Jeremy, who will graduate in 2008, obtained his license on February 4 after two years of study that included ground school, flight training, and passing a number of exams in order to meet federal licensing requirements. He is now legally able to fly all single engine airplanes, such as Tomahawks and Cessnas, which have fixed landing gear and engines generating less than 138 horsepower.

The 17-year-old, who has been interested in flying since he was five, plans to enlist in the United States Air Force upon graduation and then pursue a career in commercial aviation. More than a dozen Sterling High School students have obtained their pilot's license either before or just after graduating from its Magnet School of Aviation.
