A Message from Board President Lawrence Marshall
As president of the Board of Education, I have kept our community informed about the search process for the new superintendent of schools for the Houston Independent School District. The executive search firm, Heidrick & Struggles, was hired in April 2009. During May, the search firm conducted nearly 30 meetings with various community stakeholders to gather input about characteristics the next superintendent should possess in order to lead this district. They met with parents, elected officials, business leaders, faith-based groups, HISD employees, and others to gather important information.
During the month of June, over 100 sources and potential candidates were contacted by Heidrich & Struggles. The search included education-focused sources and national, state, and local civic business organizations with an active interest in K–12 education. Interviewing by the board began at the end of July, and on August 20 the Board of Education voted unanimously to announce the lone finalist for the superintendent position, Dr. Terry Grier.
As required by state law, the next 21 days will allow time for finalizing details of the hire. We look forward to approving Dr. Grier as the district’s next superintendent of schools at the regular board meeting on September 10, 2009.
Until then, Chief Financial Officer Melinda Garrett has been appointed by the board to serve as the district’s interim superintendent.
We are looking forward to a great academic year ahead!Thank you.
Lawrence Marshall
President, HISD Board of Education
