Are your kids ready to head back to class this fall?

If not, HISD’s annual Back to School brochure is available to help you get organized for the 2009–2010 school year.

Whether it's finding school-choice options, enrollment requirements, or useful phone numbers, Back to School has the answers.

Printable versions of this publication are available in the “Resources” box at right, but a number of convenient links are also below to help parents find the most commonly sought information.

Questions may be directed to HISD’s Information Center at 713-556-6005, or any of the numbers and departments mentioned below.

Selecting a School

To determine which schools serve your residence (based on your address), use the online “School Zone Search Tool” or call Student Transfers at 713-556-6734. HISD offers a variety of options other than the “home” or “zoned” campus, such as: Magnet/Vanguard, Alternative/CharterPrekindergarten, Montessori, Early College High Schools, Career and Technical Education, and Virtual Schooling. Parents may also apply to a school other than the “zoned” campus for other types of transfers. For more information, contact Student Transfers at 713-556-6734.

Transportation/Bus Routes

HISD provides bus service for eligible regular-education students who submit requests to their campus transportation coordinators and have them approved by the Transportation Services Department. Bus stop schedules by destination are available at that department's Web site. To find out if your child is eligible for bus service, call Routing and Scheduling at 713-613-3040. Parents may also call that number over the weekend of August 22 and 23, when a special Transportation Hotline will be set up from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Uniforms and School Supplies

Although many HISD campuses have similar requirements for what children should wear or bring to class at the start of the new academic year, parents should contact their child's school directly to determine dress codes and obtain a list of required supplies before making their purchases. A list of schools requiring uniforms is here (PDF). Assistance in purchasing uniforms/supplies may be available through Title I Program funds for economically disadvantaged children identified as homeless. Check with your child’s school for details. Also, don't miss out on Texas’ annual sales tax holiday.

School Calendar

Online and printable versions of the 2009–2010 school calendar—complete with holidays, report card dates, designated make-up days, major testing dates, days students do not attend school, and more—are available in the Calendars channel.

Meals/Free and Reduced Price Lunch

Breakfast is provided free for all students and lunch is available at no cost or a substantially reduced rate to qualifying students (see full program details here; PDF). Applications are available at each school, online, and through the Food Services Department, 713-491-5944. Menus are located here. Parents can also use Parent Online to monitor their child's cafeteria selections, pay for meals online, and restrict the types of snacks kids can purchase.

Enrollment and Immunizations

To register and enroll your child at his or her zoned campus, bring the child’s birth certificate, proof of your identity and residential address, and a record of your child’s immunizations signed by a doctor. A list of current immunization requirements is here (PDF) and details on free shots are here. Also available in English and Spanish are: Frequently Asked Questions  and Child Care Facilities' Requirements. For more information about immunizations, contact Health and Medical Services at 713-349-7423. For enrollment questions, call Student Transfers at 713-556-6734.
