Hurricane Ike Updates: Including Opening of Schools' Schedule and Information for Employees

School Reopening Schedule

All non-school HISD facilities reopened Monday, September 22, and schools began reopening in phases Tuesday, September 23. All principals and non-school employees should have reported to work on Monday, September 22.

All remaining HISD schools, except for the ones listed to the right, opened Monday, September 29. A list of all schools and their status is posted below. Parents, students, and employees from the Young Learners' sites that remain closed should watch for communications from their principal.  

Parents and students, please be aware that some city sidewalks may be blocked with piles of debris and that everyone should use caution when navigating these obstacles while traveling to and from our schools. Buses are following normal schedules.

HISD is enrolling children from other school districts heavily impacted by Hurricane Ike who are now residing within its attendance zone, at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th, 77092) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Parents can also enroll students at HISD schools. Use the School Zone Search Tool to determine which school your address is zoned to attend. If the zoned school does not have space available, parents will be directed to a campus which has space for additional students.

Communication: In addition to this Web site, HISD used many methods to keep employees and the entire Houston community up to date on the district's efforts to deal with Hurricane Ike and its aftermath. A hotline was set up to answer parents' and employees' questions regarding the schedule for the reopening of schools. Principals provided parents and staff members with information about the status of their schools via Connect-ED telephone messages. Superintendent of Schools Abelardo Saavedra and the Press Office sent Connect-ED messages to parents and employees about the many ways the district was responding to the hurricane. And the Press Office regularly briefed local newspapers and radio and television stations so they could include district information and alerts in their news reports.
