Prepared 4 Life, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the empowerment of middle-school-age children, will be holding its third annual Lemonade Day on Sunday, May 3, 2009—and HISD students and their families are encouraged to participate (view registration form here; PDF).

The communitywide event, which fosters entrepreneurship and character development among Houston’s youth, will teach children how to start, own, and operate their own business by setting up lemonade stands across the city.

Students who participate this year can enter the following competitions:

Charles Atherton Elementary School will also receive a special visit from rap sensation J. Xavier on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., as a reward for having the largest number of student registrations this year (270).

And, thanks to the generous support of Imperial Sugar and a host of other sponsors, each participating student will receive a free backpack containing an entrepreneurial workbook and a “caring-adult” guide to help them understand the steps involved in operating a successful business. Imperial Sugar is also supplying sample packets of pre-measured sweetener, a lemonade recipe booklet, and coupons for Imperial Sugar products to aid the eager young entrepreneurs.

During the 2008 Lemonade Day event, about 3,000 young HISD students established lemonade stands, either individually or in groups. This year, 64 HISD campuses will participate (see PDF list here ).

“On Lemonade Day, thousands of kids set up lemonade stands using a proven recipe for running a profitable business,” said Prepared 4 Life cofounder Michael Holthouse. “The Lemonade Day experience provides an opportunity for communities to come together to train the next generation of entrepreneurs and city leaders.”

Due to the success of the program in Houston, Lemonade Day has already expanded to other cities in Texas, Indiana, and Minnesota.
