HISD Teams Up with Texans Mascot to Clear the Air About Asthma

Elementary campuses encouraged to use new program to educate students

HISD elementary schools can bring the Houston Texans' mascot Toro to their campuses via video this year to deliver an important message about the value of proper asthma management, as well as physical fitness and nutrition.

Asthma Awareness Month has been over since June 1, but the importance of learning about this disease never diminishes. That’s why HISD has teamed up with BP and the Houston Texans’ mascot Toro to keep educating children about the value of physical fitness, proper nutrition, and consistent asthma management.

Students at 12 elementary schools—Mamie Sue Bastian, Melinda Bonner, John Codwell, Lorenzo De Zavala, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Frost, Garden Villas, R. P. Harris, Jean Hines-Caldwell, James Oates, Henry Petersen, and George Sanchez—are already scheduled to participate in a half-hour assembly this fall called Toro’s Training Table, in which the mascot interacts with Houston Texans players, cheerleaders, and the team nutritionist via video.

The program includes information from “Clearing the Air About Asthma,” a Center for Disease Control-funded program whose purpose is to supply tools and resources to HISD students with asthma and their families in order to improve the quality of their lives. It also incorporates the American Lung Association’s “Open Airways for Schools” curriculum, which increases the self-management skills of students with asthma.

To bring this valuable presentation to your campus, contact HISD Asthma Project Manager Teresa Blake at 713-942-1951 or tblake@houstonisd.org.

HISD is also partnering with the Department of Health and Human Services to present “Breathe,” a parent education program dealing with environmental triggers.
