Reagan High School Students’ Artwork Displayed at Local Art Gallery
The artwork of several John Reagan High School art students is being shown at Lawndale Art Center’s in celebration of Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”).
The art exhibition is taking place at the Lawndale Art Center (4912 Main St, 7700) until November 7.
Eleventh-grader Monica Zavala is an art student at Reagan whose work is being displayed at the exhibition. Her goal is to learn more about art through oils, acrylics, and water colors. “It feels like I have accomplished something and I feel pleased that I can share what I created and show the work I care about and that I spent time on,” said the 17-year-old. “I was happy doing it and I am glad others can see it too.”
Jacob Byers loves to express himself through art, too. His goal is to be become an architect. “I love art, it’s a great way to be expressive,” said the 15-year old. ”I like seeing our work out there now so other people can see it. Maybe I’ll be famous one day.”
“We have a lot of talented students at Reagan and I am happy to have the privilege to work with them,” explained Reagan High School Art Teacher Anthony Day. “In the art classes I teach, I look for opportunities for the students to see their work in a broader context. This gives the weight and importance that is often missing to the hard work that they do. I think students need as much experience outside the classroom, so they can know their voices and vision has a greater purpose in our community.”
Día de los Muertos programs and exhibitions at Lawndale Art Center promote cultural awareness of Mexican folk art practices associated with this celebration of family, life, and community. This program supports area artists and students by offering them an opportunity to show their works to diverse audiences in a museum quality setting.
