HISD is one of the largest employers in Houston, and we are committed to giving back to our community. Last year HISD employees demonstrated their caring and generosity toward those in need by pledging almost $580,000 to nearly 700 local, national, and global charities.
HISD employees, please read the message below from Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier, Ed.D., about how you can help make a difference!

Making the Difference
Superintendent of Schools
On October 19, 2009, we kick off our annual employee Combined Charities Campaign. HISD employees have been outstanding supporters of the annual campaign that raises funds for the 600 nonprofit organizations that are part of the campaign. This year, many Houstonians and their families were recipients of the services these organizations provide.
Many of these organizations have provided much-needed support to people both in this area and throughout the world who have been the victims of natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. But these organizations also provide crucial help and services in a variety of ways unrelated to catastrophic events. By focusing on a wide range of important community and global issues, from education to the environment, from health concerns to social justice, they touch the lives of all of us.
I know that this is a difficult time for many Houstonians because of recent downturns and even collapses in the nation's economy. But HISD has a proud history of reaching out to those in need, and I hope the district will maintain its tradition of generosity and concern. I invite each of you to consider giving through the campaign to help these charities continue their vital work in Houston and around the world. The online payroll-deduction pledge system makes it easy to give. Your Combined Charities Campaign coordinator will distribute campaign brochures and demonstrate the features of the online system.
Thank you for all you do to make Houston a better place to live and to learn, and for your support for people in need whoever and wherever they may be.
