Shop Tax-Free Days for School Supplies and Uniforms

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced the preliminary school–supply list  and the uniform list (PDF) for each school. Parents of HISD students will get a break from state and local taxes on school supplies if they shop August 17–19 during the state's annual tax holiday.

The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales tax for that weekend, which would save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students get the tax break, including backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back like a traditional backpack.

The three-day tax holiday on many school items has been moved from the first weekend of August to the third weekend to accommodate a new state law that mandates a later start for the school year. At HISD, students return August 27.
