Power for Schools

Most schools need to generate additional income to offset declining revenue from traditional sources and to raise money for things for which schools cannot spend public funds. The traditional method is to ask students to sell products to parents and the community. However, children making door-to-door sales calls is not always safe. In addition, most parents and school supporters will tell you that they would welcome an end to the annual sales of candy, candles, wrapping paper, magazines, cookie dough, and other products they neither want nor need—and, for many parents, these fundraisers can be a financial burden. As an alternative, HISD has developed Power for Schools, a program that eliminates the negative aspects of traditional fundraising methods.
Power for Schools recruits major retail electric providers that agree to offer their best available rates to school supporters and to make a monthly contribution for each supporter who signs up through the program and designates a school to receive the contribution. After comparing providers, supporters can decide which plan is best for them and then direct a monthly contribution from the electric provider to a specific school. School supporters can also enroll by telephone. |

Why Power for Schools is a better way to raise funds
To be a successful fundraising alternative, the following criteria must be met:
- Provide monthly income to schools
- Bear no cost to schools or their supporters
- Relieve teachers and other school staff members from time-consuming fundraising tasks
- Is easy for parents and school supporters to participate
Power for Schools meets those criteria. Now, parents and school supporters can raise money for their favorite school through the electricity they use every day. There is no additional cost to them or the school, no more buying unwanted products, school staff members no longer have to deal with distributing products and collecting money, and no more door-to-door sales visits for children!
