Hundreds of Students Vie for Crown in Annual Name That Book Contest
Popular lines from movies are quoted every day in regular conversation, and most people know where those phrases originated. If you’ve ever heard, “There’s no place like home,” or “Here’s looking at you, kid,” you can probably “name that movie.”
In the same fashion, HISD’s Library Services Department has been challenging students in grades K–12 to “Name That Book” for years—and they do so in an overwhelming fashion!
More than 1,000 students participated in the 2010 Name That Book contest, which is divided into four levels: Lower Elementary (Grades K–2), Upper Elementary (Grades 3–6), Middle School (Grades 7 and 8), and High School (Grades 9–12). Students who join their school’s Name That Book team started preparing for the spring competition in August, reading 30 or more books that included everything from classics to new fiction and non-fiction.
This year, 196 teams competed in a preliminary contest, where groups of five or six students listened intently for quotes to be read, wrote their answers on a dry erase board in 45 seconds or less, or found the cover of the books in their booklet in the K–2 contest. The teams with the most answers correct out of 25 quotes advanced to the finals, where they were challenged with 25 new quotes.
