Volunteers in Public Schools Program
Procedures for Returning Volunteers and New Volunteers
Thank you for your interest in volunteering in the Houston Independent School District. Effective October 3, 2011, the HISD volunteer database will begin updating volunteer information and accepting identification for resubmission for the criminal history background check process on all returning volunteers. *A returning volunteer is a person who has already registered online and has been cleared to volunteer in HISD prior to June 1, 2011.
To become a returning volunteer in HISD is as simple as 1, 2, 3…
Step 1: Confirm that you are a returning volunteer and not a new volunteer. Note: If you are a new volunteer, please register online and follow the steps outlined below for all new volunteers.
Step 2: Returning volunteers will not need to register online again. All returning volunteers are required to go in person to the school of interest and show proof of identification to the school’s Volunteers In Schools Information Tracking System (VISITS) coordinator for the resubmission of the criminal history background check. For a list of the types of identification accepted, please contact the VISITS coordinator at your child’s school.
Step 3: Contact the school’s VISITS coordinator for your status. Once CLEARED to volunteer, you are eligible to volunteer throughout the HISD for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
How to become a new volunteer in HISD
- All new volunteers must register online at www.houstonisd.org. Click on VIPS login under the Parents or Community link section.
- Once you have registered, you must go in person to the school of interest and show proof of identification to the school’s VISITS coordinator for submission for the criminal background check.
- Once CLEARED to volunteer, you are eligible to volunteer throughout the HISD for the 2012 – 2013 school year.
