Houston Press, May 8 2013 - A call comes in over the walkie-talkies "There are students who can't get into the school. The gates are locked." School receptionist Cherlyn Pinkney immediately goes into action, calling out for help and soon the late-arriving students and their cars are inside the black fencing. The gates at Sterling High School are there, it is explained, not to lock in the kids, but to keep trouble makers and the bad guys out. That this occasionally backfires is part and parcel of the days at this school in south Houston.
KHUF News, April 15, 2013 - It’s going to cost at least $10 million dollars to equip every high school student with a laptop in HISD. The district is going to spend $100 million dollars in bond money to upgrade the network infrastructure to support those computers.
Houston chronicle, Feb 1, 2013. HISD officials are crafting a multimillion-dollar technology plan that would provide students with laptops to use in class and at home in an effort to modernize teaching and close the digital divide between rich and poor. Superintendent Terry Grier said his goal is to equip all 130,000 students in grades three through 12 with a laptop and hopes to start with at least some high schools next year. He will try to rally community support for the concept during his State of the Schools speech on Friday and plans to submit a formal proposal to the school board in coming months.
A half-day event, held at Kingdom Builders Center, gave more than 200 school officials, parents and community members the opportunity to share their thoughts on creating innovative educational environments, as the district kicks off its bond program to repair, build or replace 40 schools across the city.
KHOU, Oct. 2 -- Each day, HISD’s Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy starts with a daily affirmation and the school creed. In unison, the girls state they are R.O.S.E.S.—responsible, organized and part of a sisterhood that is exceptional.
