Among livestock managers, it is generally understood that the animals come first, and their care-givers second.

Keeping their animals safe and healthy just got a little easier for National FFA Organization (FFA) students at Bellaire High School, thanks to a $21,000 grant to improve the facilities at the Riceville Ag-Science Barn from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The grant was solicited by the Bellaire FFA Booster Club and will be used to totally enclose the premises with six-foot fences topped by three strands of barbed wire. An electronic gate will also be installed at the facility, which is located at 11611 Riceville School Road, between South Gessner and Beltway 8 off West Bellfort.

The new security measures are designed to reduce the number of animals lost to wild dogs and the coyotes that live in the area.

Bellaire was one of only four schools to be awarded grants during this cycle.
