HISD is bringing Houston's first "STEM" program to the Third Ward community.
Opening in August 2008, on the third floor of Jack Yates High School, the Energized for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy (E-STEM) will offer an exceptional educational choice for students entering the ninth grade who are interested in participating in rigorous and challenging studies in a non-traditional setting.
E-STEM will be led by Lois Bullock, a dynamic educator who has been delivering outstanding educational opportunities to HISD students for a decade.
"This is the type of rigor and creative learning that needs to be happening in our district," said Board of Education First Vice President Paula Harris, who represents District IV. "Our community is ready to embrace a high-achievement program that will help our children compete in the global arena because of their exposure and success in science, technology, engineering and math."
The E-STEM course of studies will be particularly appealing to students that are creative, learn best through hands-on experiences, and are able to use technology as a springboard to deeper understanding of their academic course work. STEM-trained teachers will provide students with exciting project-based, real world challenges and allow students to construct, create, design, and problem solve while learning deep science, mathematics, and engineering content.
In keeping with the district's mission of creating a college-bound culture in every school, E-STEM students will be able to earn college credits while still in high school that will prepare them for postsecondary academics as well as technical careers in a variety of fields.
Support for the program will be provided by a coalition of stakeholders and community partners including: the City of Houston Green Program, Rice University, Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, and CSTEM Teacher and Student Support Services.
The E-STEM program will be open to students entering the ninth grade in August. Enrollment will be limited to 100 students in the 2008–2009 school year and one grade level will be added each year. The program is tuition free to out-of-district students. Student acceptance to the new program is based on available space. The school is located at 3703 Sampson Street, 77004. Applications can be found at www.estemacademy.org.
