What We Do

The Houston ISD Athletic Department is the largest in the state of Texas, with fourteen 4A high schools, nine 5A high schools, and 39 middle schools participating athletically. We have one of the most extensive athletic programs in the nation. The Athletic Department operates three sports complexes, which serve Houston's schools with game sites, game control, and equipment storage and repair. The athletic programs serve students in grades 7-12 at 23 high schools and 39 middle schools. High school programs include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swim, tennis, and volleyball. Middle school programs include basketball, cross-country, football, soccer, swim, track, volleyball and wrestling.

HISD's program of interscholastic athletics allows students to compete beyond the level required by physical education classes. The athletic programs also give coaches the opportunity to channel students' interests and enthusiasm and mold them into responsible, productive citizens.

The Houston ISD Athletic Department hosts events annually, such as the Jaycees Boys Basketball Tournament, Varsity Girls Basketball Invitational, Varsity Volleyball Invitational and the Houston Relays track event.
