New Mark Twain Elementary School
Construction of the new Mark Twain Elementary School (pictured) was funded through Rebuild HISD, the $808.6-million bond program approved by voters in 2002. The life-size statue of the famous author at the school’s entrance was a gift from past and present Twain students.

In 2002, voters overwhelmingly approved the $808.6-million Rebuild HISD bond program, whose goal was to rebuild, upgrade, and renovate schools that no longer met modern standards for learning.

This bond also addressed schools with the most critical needs, and Rebuild HISD projects included the construction of six new schools, the renovation of 28 others, the rebuilding of 21 additional schools, and the expansion of seven schools.

In addition, Rebuild HISD addressed the renovation of gymnasiums districtwide (including the installation of air-conditioning systems in all middle- and high-school facilities), the development of four early-childhood education centers throughout the district, and the upgrading of 125 school playgrounds.
