Middle School Magnet Programs

Listed below are program descriptions, locations, and phone numbers. As you explore the Magnet program offerings, keep in mind that academics are always the primary focus on all HISD campuses.

You may apply to as many general Magnet programs as you like, using the general Magnet application form. Vanguard Magnet programs are limited in that they only serve students who have been identified as potentially gifted or talented in intellectual ability, creativity, or leadership. To apply to a Vanguard Magnet program, use a Vanguard Magnet application and specify the three Vanguard Magnet schools you would like to attend. Submit one application to your first-choice school.

Languages
The Language Magnet Program at Pin Oak Middle School has been growing since the school opened its doors in 2002. Presently, six languages are studied in the Magnet program: Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, & Spanish. The program offers many opportunities to learn these languages through interdisciplinary study. A major effort of the program is to incorporate the fine arts into the learning of language by having students use their language of study in a variety of creative productions and projects.

Math and Science

Mathematics and science Magnet programs give students the opportunity for in-depth, process-oriented study in science- and math-related fields in conjunction with a strong academic program. Students are encouraged to develop laboratory skills through active, "hands-on" experimentation in a variety of science courses.

Math and computer study promotes critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Magnet students compete regularly in math, science, and computer fairs and participate in clubs and other school activities.

Selection for math and science programs is based on a matrix of grades on the most recent end-of-year and current first-of-year report cards, scores on the Stanford 9 math and science subtests and the TAKS math subtest, and the most recent end-of-year conduct grade.

Magnet programs in science and mathematics are offered at the following schools:
