Applicants must have completed a police training academy, approved by The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), and pass the state licensing exam. Out-of-state officers who have challenged the state licensing exam successfully may apply also. Officers are provided with forty hours of TCLEOSE-approved continuing education courses each annually.
Prospective applicants must have completed one of the following:
- 30 college hours with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average; or
- Two years active duty military service with a honorable discharge; or
- Two years continuous full-time paid law enforcement service.
