District Names Jimmie Dotson the New Chief of HISD Police Force

The new chief of the HISD Police Department is a familiar name in local law enforcement. Jimmie L. Dotson served in the Houston Police Department from 1974 to 1997, working his way up to executive assistant chief of police.

He became chief of the police department in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1997. He returned home to the Houston area in 2004 and served as a consultant on law enforcement issues, including the development of a comprehensive law enforcement management plan for The Woodlands.

Chief Dotson takes the helm of the HISD Police Department on February 2. He replaces former chief Charles Wiley, who came to the district in October 2006 and resigned in June 2008 to become the Galveston Island police chief.

“Chief Dotson brings a wealth of law enforcement experience to the district and is already well known and respected by the local law enforcement community,” said HISD Superintendent of Schools Abelardo Saavedra. “That is extremely important in building upon the relationships and partnerships we have with area law enforcement agencies.”

“I am eager to begin this new chapter in my career,” said Chief Dotson. “From a policing perspective, there may be no better way to impact the future of Houston than to lead the agency responsible for the security of our schools. By providing a safe and secure learning environment, we enhance the opportunities for our children to succeed.”

The HISD Police Department is the only nationally accredited school district police department in the country. It is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
