Chief of Police

Chief Jimmie L. Dotson took the helm of the Houston ISD Police Department on February 2, 2009.
He was the Law Enforcement Consultant who recently worked with the Community Associations of The Woodlands, where he was credited with designing and implementing a plan to enhance law enforcement services to all residents of The Woodlands. He also serves on the Homicide Intervention Council for the Houston Police Department.

Mayor Jon Kinsey appointed Dotson as Chief of Police for the city of Chattanooga, on August 21, 1997 where he served until February 1, 2004. In Chattanooga, he was able to lead the department to full accreditation in less than two years. He was instrumental in initiating many innovative programs such as “The Transformation Project”, “Project Oasis”, and “The Fear and Crime Reduction Plan”. He transformed the department from a reactive to a proactive force that is technically advanced, fiscally sound and community oriented The department received “Best Practices Awards for its handling of Civil Rights issues in 1998 and had a nationally recognized 20% reduction in violent crimes in 2002.

Prior to this appointment, he retired as an Executive Assistant Chief of Police for the Houston, Texas Police Department. Dotson joined the Houston Police Department in 1974. During his twenty-four year career, Dotson served in many divisions as an officer, supervisor and manager. He is credited with devising the department’s first physical fitness program and with forming Houston’s award-winning Crimestoppers Program with two fellow officers. He was appointed Assistant Chief of Police in 1990 and Executive Assistant Chief of Police in 1997. As Executive Chief of Police, he was second in command and responsible for over 1,850 persons plus all the administrative functions of this department of over 5,000 personnel. Chief Dotson received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston and his Masters of Arts Degree from Houston Baptist University. In addition, he is a graduate of Governmental Programs for Senior Executives in State and Local Agencies at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Chief Dotson is a member of several professional organizations including the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives as National President 2006-2007, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum and the American Society of Industrial Security. Dotson was active in Chattanooga, where he served on the Boards of the Boys Scouts and the Girl Scouts, the Urban League and the United Way of Chattanooga. He presently serves as Chair of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program Board. He serves on the Interfaith of The Woodlands Board, on the Tamina Leadership Team and the Personnel Committee at Crossroads B. C., and as a mentor to prison inmates.  Chief Dotson is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran. He is a born again Christian and he and his wife Elsa are members of Crossroads B. C. in The Woodlands, TX. They were also founding members of St. Paul B. C. of The Woodlands. His hobbies include physical exercise, reading and traveling.
