Certified Year 1 & 2

Mentors of certified Year 1 and 2 teachers are supporting beginning teachers who have completed their certification requirements. Mentor support includes classroom observation and feedback, coaching strategies, and collaborative work on teacher growth activities.

Mentors of HISD ACP Mentors

All ACP teacher interns are required to be assigned a mentor. HISD alternative certification plan (ACP) program teacher interns are those participating in the HISD ACP Program to complete their certification requirements.

Mentors of HISD ACP teacher interns have two sets of mentor responsibilities:

  • Classroom observation requirements specified by the HISD ACP program in the HISD ACP Intern Notebook
  • The minimal ABRAZO mentor documentation completed by every mentor in HISD

The mentor may collaborate with the HISD ACP Supervisor regarding the ACP mentor responsibilities. Upon the completion of the ACP mentor requirements, the mentor will become eligible for a partial stipend equivalent to the amount payroll-deducted from the intern. Upon the completion of both ACP requirements and minimal ABRAZO documentation, the mentor of the HISD ACP teacher will become eligible for the full mentor stipend.

International Teachers

International teachers (ITs) are those teachers new to HISD who have no previous teaching experience in the United States. HISD actively recruits teachers from several countries, including the Philippines, Spain, Russia, Panama, China, and several other countries. While the Human Resources department often recognizes multiple years of experience for an international teacher, s/he is afforded a maximum of two (2) years of mentor support because of his/her status as a beginning teacher in HISD and the U.S.

The international teacher may be seeking Texas certification, but will not be a participant in an alternative certification program*. For this reason, the IT mentor will follow the Certified Mentor support guidelines. (* NOTE: If the teacher is participating in an ACP, please refer to the HISD ACP or Non-HISD ACP Mentor Support links.)

Mentors of international teachers are supporting experienced teachers who will need encouragement and guidance as they adjust to the unique classroom culture of HISD schools. Because ITs are certified teachers, International teacher mentor support includes classroom observation and feedback, coaching strategies, and collaborative work on teacher growth activities.

Non-HISD ACP Mentors

All ACP teacher interns are required to be assigned a mentor. Non-HISD alternative certification plan (ACP) program teacher interns are those participating in university/college or independent programs outside of HISD to complete their certification requirements.

Mentors of non-HISD ACP teacher interns have two sets of mentor responsibilities:

  • Training and observation requirements specified by ACP program
  • The minimal ABRAZO mentor documentation completed by every mentor in HISD

The mentor may collaborate with the Field Supervisor regarding the ACP mentor responsibilities. Upon the completion of the ACP mentor requirements, the mentor will become eligible for a partial stipend equivalent to the amount payroll-deducted from the intern. No portion of the mentor stipend is paid by the ACP program.

To be eligible for the full mentor stipend, the must complete the minimal HISD mentor requirements. These minimal requirements include the submission of mentor ID and agreement forms, a mentee action plan, article study, and stipend request. The mentor will receive the ABRAZO orange mentor documentation folder from the Campus Lead Mentor/Contact (or from the PDS-Mentor Program office upon request). The mentor will access the non-HISD ACP mentor link and submit the necessary ABRAZO documentation. Mentors who support ACP teacher interns will concentrate support in building a foundation in planning, delivery, assessment skills.
