Students at HISD’s Richard Dowling Middle School had more than two dozen reasons to celebrate the opening of a new neighborhood healthcare facility for children on the city’s southwest side earlier this year.
The first was that the Corinthian Pointe community now has its own “Project Medical Home” branch of Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates (TCPA), which provides convenient, affordable access to top-quality primary healthcare services to children in underserved areas of Houston.
The rest were hanging on the walls of the new facility: approximately 31 original artworks created by Dowling students in grades 6, 7, and 8, which are now on permanent display there.
“In working with the clinic staff, an art theme was determined to convey the idea of ‘healthy kids,’” said TCPA Graphic Designer and Art Program Coordinator Jena F. Guajardo. “Dowling art teachers Amelia Kennison-Jenkins and Christina Briscoe, along with Magnet Coordinator Linda Burkley, graciously accepted the challenge of taking on this art project and working with their students to create artwork that portrayed various physical activities, along with reading and healthy eating habits.”
The result was a colorful array of images that proved the perfect fit for the new TCPA location (5505 West Orem Drive, 77085). Dowling was selected to contribute student artwork because of its proximity to the new facility. The campus is located approximately one mile away, to the southeast.
Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates operates four additional Project Medical Homes in the Houston area: 6001 Gulf Freeway, 5900 Chimney Rock, 4410 Navigation Blvd., and 5751 Blythewood. For more information, visit the Texas Children’s Web site.
