October 06, 2009

Board of Education President Lawrence Marshall, Worthing High School PTO President Nadine Hypolite, Principal Tamara Sterling, and South Region Superintendent Warner Ervin (L-R) unveiled plans for a new classroom wing at the campus on October 6, 2009. Marshall is hosting a town-hall meeting on October 7 to solicit community input.

HISD Board of Education President Lawrence Marshall will be hosting a town-hall meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, to get community input on a plan to renovate Evan Worthing High School (9215 Scott, 77051).

Marshall unveiled preliminary plans for the school during a press conference held on October 6. He was accompanied by HISD Chief Business Officer Dick Lindsay, who oversees the bond office, South Region Superintendent Warner Ervin, Worthing Principal Tamara Sterling, and the architects on the project.

Under the 2007 bond issue, Worthing was originally slated for a $17,150,000 renovation, but in September, board members voted to add $121.5 million (or $13.5 million for each trustee) to fund upgrades and changes in bond projects.

Marshall, who serves District IX, decided to commit $7 million of his allotment for the Worthing project in order to add a brand new classroom wing. The existing school facility will be renovated and tied into the new wing with a new entrance much like the bond project at Westbury High School.

The board is expected to vote on additional expenditures from the $121.5 million fund at its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, October 8. The meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Auditorium of the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th, 77092).

In addition to the bond project, Worthing High School also has a brand new principal, Tamara Sterling, who is working hard to improve academics at the campus. For example, the school has added more flexible hours on nights and weekends so that students can catch up through credit recovery.

Sterling, who is the first female principal in Worthing's 50-year history, is a recent graduate of the HISD Aspiring Principals Institute.
