The Character Education plan, adopted by the Board of Education, calls for all schools to implement a K-12 values program with instruction provided weekly and reinforced throughout the school on a daily basis. To date, over 35,000 teachers, counselors, librarians and administrative staff have attended the character education workshops. HISD’s Character Education Program  (.pdf) is the largest program in the nation and is recognized as one of the most outstanding and successful programs.

The Texas Education Agency is pleased to announce a joint effort with the Character Education Program of the Houston Independent School District to support the Character Education Partnership’s State Schools of Character (SSOC) Awards Program.  The school selected each year as an SSOC winner automatically qualifies as a contestant for the CEP National Schools of Character Awards, which includes both national recognition and a monetary award of up to $10,000 to continue the development of their program.  These programs recognize districts that exemplify CEP’s nationally recognized Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education in every aspect of campus life.
