The Houston Independent School District standardization policy ensures network compatibility throughout the district. All technology components, both hardware and software, are tested and reviewed by the HISD technology department, prior to approval for purchase, to ensure compatibility and reliability in the HISD environment. All technology components must also meet the guidelines of HISD Board policy and must be purchased from the approved supplier of the product, where applicable.

Purchase of non-standard hardware and software will not be approved for purchase or use in the district. To meet the district's goal of Internet access in the classroom and reduce the total cost of ownership, all computers purchased for use in HISD have the expectation of being connected to the network. Any non-standard computer will be considered in the same category as a donation and must comply with the donations policy.

Hardware - Minimum Standards

Components that are evaluated by technology include:
1. Computers
2. Networked printers
3. Wireless devices
4. Peripherals that connect to network devices
5. Networked Software or any software application that uses the HISD network.

The Technology web page provides information on the standards for hardware and software components that have been pre-approved for purchase.
