| UPDATE: HISD Bond Proposal 2007 approved by voters. See related story here. On August 9, 2007, the Houston Independent School District Board of Education voted to place an $805-million bond referendum on the November general-election ballot. The proposed bond initiative is the third in a series of three bond issues aimed at renovating, repairing, and replacing aging school facilities throughout the district. Facilities slated for improvements in this third phase of work are located throughout the district and were selected on the basis of a facilities assessment conducted by an independent professional services firm hired by HISD. - All schools in the district will receive safety and security upgrades including new fencing, security cameras, public address systems, and other security enhancements
($90.3 million) - All middle- and high-school science labs will be updated and improved ($29.2 million)
- 24 new schools will be built
- 13 new schools to replace aging facilities too costly to repair ($212 million)
- 3 new schools to relieve overcrowding ($62 million)
- 2 new facilities for early college high schools (ECHS) in the north and south, and a third ECHS in a renovated facility in central Houston ($11 million)
