Dr. Amy Poerschke (pronounced “purse-key”)
Dear Durham Students, Teachers, Parents, and Community Partners:
As the principal of Durham Elementary IB World School, building relationships and supporting the needs, talents, and interests of our students, teachers, and parents is of the upmost importance. I am excited to work collaboratively with you to ensure that all Durham students are prepared to compete at the highest academic levels, take action, and positively impact our ever- changing world.
At Durham, both adults and children are challenged to develop the skills of being knowledgeable, reflective, communicators, thinkers, caring, principled, open-minded, risk takers, inquirers, and balanced. The development of these IB attributes in our young people not only lead toward high academic performance, but more importantly, lead our children to become compassionate, principled and reflective citizens in our international community. These very same attributes are critical for all members of our learning community to strive for and model, including our front office staff, teachers, and administrative team. These essential attributes reflect who I strive to be in all interactions with our students, teachers, parents, and community partners.
Along with our school becoming a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School, I am proud to say that Durham is one of the few Dual Language and PYP schools within the state of Texas. We offer four enrichments to further support the development of our students including: music, physical education, arts, and Spanish literature. At Durham, our teachers are committed to developing the whole child.
I began my career in
education as a teacher here in Houston ISD. I have taught reading language arts
at both Dodson Elementary School and Garcia Elementary School. I served as
Assistant Principal of Garcia Elementary in 2013 until being named principal of
Durham Elementary School in 2015. I am a proud Baylor Bear having completed my
undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at Baylor University. I
completed my master’s degree in Educational Administration at the University of
St Thomas and completed my doctoral
degree in K-12 Executive Leadership from the
University of Houston. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, photography,
and traveling with my husband, family and friends.
