Ten elementary and middle school students from across HISD have earned the opportunity to advance to the PBS-Channel 8 Citywide Spelling Bee and potentially advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The Houston ISD UIL Academics Department sponsored and coordinated five district bees in HISD throughout the month of February.
More than 160 students from as many schools proudly took their place onstage to demonstrate their spelling ability. Revere Middle School and Young Men’s College Preparatory Academy served as venues for the contests. Each district bee crowned one champion and runner up who will represent their school in the Citywide Bee, which will be televised on Channel 8 on March 29, 2014. The District and Citywide bees work closely with the National Spelling Bee. The National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company.
The Houston ISD UIL Academics Department mission is to extend classroom learning by offering extra-curricular academic and fine arts competitions that increase academic success and improve social and emotional development. For more information, please contact Don Hernandez email@example.com.
