Friday, February 17, 2017, four cadets (three seniors and one junior) competed for the coveted Superior Instructor Ribbon. This ribbon is awarded annually to up to four cadets per high school by the JROTC Department at HISD. The purpose of this program is to improve oral instruction by the cadets. The Cadets competed for the Superior Instructor Ribbon were Cadet Major Phuong Tran, Cadet Major Larry Sorto, Cadet Command Sergeant Major Frank Valdez and Cadet First Lieutenant Sophia Beskid.
To compete in the Superior Instructor Ribbon each cadet is required to pick a topic based on the program of instruction taught at their specific high school and give a lesson/presentation to his/her peers. Each cadet has between 25-40 minutes to present the lesson. Visual aids and interaction with the other students are highly encouraged. Lamar's Cadets topics ranged from First Aid-controlling bleeding to recognizing and dealing with poisons. LTC Marshall, Deputy Director, of JROTC programs at HISD evaluated all four cadets and gave them high marks for their instruction.
