Dr. Charlotte Haney

About me:

I have had the pleasure of being part of the Carnegie Community as a parent since the first year Carnegie moved to the W. Grey location. I've seen two of my children graduate from Carnegie. Between my own children and their Carnegie friends, I have a lot of direct experience with the amazing doors that Carnegie opens and it is wonderful to be part of our community in the capacity of teacher.

I received my B.A. in English Literature from the University of Texas at Austin, a M.A. in Anthropology at the University of Houston and my Ph.D. in Anthropology from Case Western Reserve University.  I have taught at the high school and university levels in the United States and Mexico for over 17 years.  In particular, I love teaching students during big life transitions. Freshman and senior years are times of so much development--both exciting and anxiety-inducing. Helping students through these transitions is very satifying work.

I am currently teaching AP Human Geography and AP Macroeconomics/AP Government.

Three things all Freshman parents can do to help their children be successful:

1. Help them get organized!  (In APHuG, assignment deadlines are very predictable and should be on their agenda),

2. Set your expectations appropriately (your 14/15 yr old is in a college course, if their grades are improving--even if they start off low--that is something to celebrate with them.  They are developing the skills that will help them be successful at college. Make sure they know that missing assignments are not acceptable--Look in Powerschool for ZEROS--that means they are not doing the practice they need to do to be successful!). At Carnegie, we take academic integrity very seriously and after three offenses, students may be exited. By helping your student develop organization and study skills rather than focusing on grades, you can help avoid lapses in academic integrity and you will see those grades improve! 

3. Talk to them about the content, especially in Human Geo (we will be talking about things that you have lots of experience with--share your experiences and ideas with your student).
