    Course Description:

Health Science Theory is better named, “Health Care Theory and Practice” as students will study and practice hands-on patient care skills used to care for patients across multiple health care fields. Throughout the year, we will study and practice techniques of doctors, nurses, technicians, PT’s, pharmacists, medical assistants, and more. We will learn health care theory through a study of different diseases and treatments, focusing on the Musculoskeletal System, Reproductive System, Integumentary System, Cardiovascular System, Endocrine System, Nervous System, and Immune System. The Health Science Theory course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. The required course pre-requisites include Principles of Health Science and Biology.

    Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, students will exhibit knowledge and skills, in addition to the attitudes and values of caring for patients within the health care system from a perspective of multiple professions. Students will know how to plan, manage, provide, and communicate the following: therapeutic services, diagnostic services, and support services, as related to individualized patient health care. Students will learn theory and practice hands-on skills and patient care techniques. Students will demonstrate accomplishment of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Health Care Theory, which are documented in Subchapter H, §130.231 accessible here: https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/130H-Health%20Sci%20tc.pdf

    Tutorials:

Individual and small group tutoring sessions will be available to students three times weekly on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday during lunch at noon. All tutorials will be held in room South 114. Students are encouraged to sign-up for tutorials in advance through email, TEAMS or Remind message.

    Grading Policy:

Major Grades – includes Essays, Projects, Exams                           70%

Daily Assignments, Quizzes, Labs and VASK score                         30%

What is VASK? VASK stands for values, attitudes, skills, and knowledge. Professional health care workers abide by a unique set of values, attitudes, skills, and knowledge, which distinguish health care workers from all other professional careers. As a health care professional, it is an honor, a privilege, and an onerous responsibility to care for the life of another human being. Students participating in the Health Care Science Technology CTE track will model and develop these characteristics throughout the academic year. The expectation is that students who choose the health care science CTE track will earn full credit for their VASK scores. Points will be deducted for violation of health care VASK traits such as dishonesty, disrespect, apathy, and others; such incidents will be documented within 24 hours. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to earn additional points toward their VASK score for exceptional display of the VASK traits.

Late work: All work is expected to be submitted electronically to the HUB or by email (when the HUB is down) no later than 11:59PM on the published due date. Any late work submitted after the cut-off time must be posted to the HUB AND emailed directly to Anna.Haro@Houstonisd.org with a full paragraph explaining why the work was submitted late. Late work submitted after the published due date can earn a maximum of 70%.

Exam Re-Take: HISD School Guidelines explain that “a student may be allowed a reasonable opportunity to make up or redo an examination for which the student received a failing grade.”

At Westside, a retake is an assessment that matches the rigor and objectives of an original exam. Retakes often increase a student’s grade, but they may not. The primary purpose is a second opportunity to demonstrate mastery of course material.

Health Care Theory retake replacement grades are capped at 75 and sophomores are permitted two re-takes per semester.

Student Retake Eligibility Only major grade exams are eligible for a retake.

    • To qualify for the retake, any student is required to complete a remediation task prior to retesting. Tasks include two of the following:
      • Attend tutorials for an entire week (minimum of 1 cumulative hour)
      • Complete research paper
      • Complete prerequisite homework
    • Retake must be completed within one week of original test grade being posted in PowerSchool.
    • Retakes are for grades 75 and below only.
    • Students with absences still have the opportunity to have a retake once they take the make-up exam.
    • Retakes are not allowed for final exams.
    • Alternative major grades (projects, labs, essays, other long term assignments, etc.) are subject to teacher discretion for retake approval. Teachers will share retake eligibility on these grades.

Homework: This class will be study-intensive to learn the course content, including patient care techniques and skills. Students will receive ample time to complete daily work and group projects ahead of published due dates. “Homework” will include exam preparation and study time, which is the individual responsibility of each student.

Communication Policy: All students, parents, guardians, and classroom visitors are invited to email, text (via Remind app) or call Dr. Haro regarding any questions or comments about course content, grades, discipline, projects, exams, and assignments. Emails and phone calls will be answered within the next business day (for example, a Monday email will be answered no later than Tuesday, but a Friday phone call will be answered no later than the following Monday assuming it is not a school holiday). If there is an emergency, please state at the beginning of the email, text, or voicemail that it is “URGENT” and every effort will be made to respond as soon as possible pending other teaching commitments.

Teacher Bio: Dr. Haro earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Chicago College of Pharmacy at Midwestern University where she was class president, president of the Rho Chi National Pharmacy Honor Society, and Summa Cum Laude graduate. Her career in pharmacy has included work for cancer patients and experience in the emergency room. Dr. Haro has worked in community pharmacy settings for both retail chain and independent pharmacies. Dr. Haro’s passion for teaching others spans more than three decades but is most evident in various teaching positions including six years as a public school teacher and three years at Texas A&M University. Additionally, Dr. Haro completed her Bachelors and Masters degrees in music performance and is a former professional classical musician. Her hobbies include performing music, competitive athletics, coaching her son’s soccer team, and spending quality time with her kids and family. Her proudest accomplishment to date is surviving Stage 3 Colon Cancer and living every day to the fMed term SOAP Notes PPTullest.
