Chibok Girls
Discussion “Do Now”
For females only:
What would you do if you were taken away in your senior year of high school and sold as a “bride” to someone you had never met? What if your family couldn’t help you?
For males only:
What if this happened to your sister or your cousin? What if you knew that you would be killed for interfering?
Words to know:
Boko Haram-is a militant Islamist movement based in northeast Nigeria. The group was designated by the United States as a terrorist organization in November 2013. Membership has been estimated to number between a few hundred and a few thousand.
Sambisa Forest-Sambisa Forest and Sambisa Forest Reserve are located in Nigeria. It covers an area of approximately 60,000 square kilometers in Nigeria's northeast, and was at one time a game reserve with leopards, lions, elephants, hyenas and huts built for tourists to stay in. However, the African government allowed the place to fall into a state of disrepair as the animals died, the roofs leaked, weeds covered the roads, water stopped flowing, there was no power and the whole reserve became abandoned in 1991.
The Sambisa forest has become a camp for terrorist group Boko Haram.

What Happened
On the night of 14–15 April 2014, a group of militants attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria. They broke into the school, pretending to be guards, telling the girls to get out and come with them. A large number of students were taken away in trucks, possibly into the Konduga area of the Sambisa Forest where Boko Haram were known to have fortified camps. Houses in Chibok were also burned down in the incident. The school had been closed for four weeks prior to the attack due to the deteriorating security situation, but students from multiple schools had been called in to take final exams in physics.
On May 5, 2014, a video in which Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claimed responsibility for the kidnappings of emerged. Shekau claimed that "Allah instructed me to sell them...I will carry out his instructions” and "Slavery is allowed in my religion, and I shall capture people and make them slaves."
He said the girls should not have been in school and instead should have been married since girls as young as nine are suitable for marriage.
