
AP Statistics Syllabus

This course provides instruction in each of the following four broad conceptual themes outlined in the Course Description with appropriate emphasis on each:
 Sampling and experimentation
 Exploring data
 Anticipating patterns
 Statistical inference
Activities in the sections below will satisfy course requirements by enabling students to do the following:
 Draw connections between all aspects of the statistical process, including design, analysis, and conclusions – This will be reinforced throughout the course by referring to prior knowledge from earlier chapters and connecting it to the current topic. Several examples of this include connecting the concept of the normal distribution to its application in sampling distributions and inference, connecting the concept of experimental design to inference when discussing matched pairs or tests using the ChiSquared statistic, and connecting the concept of probability to inference when discussing the pvalue for a hypothesis test. This is not an exhaustive list as many of the topics in the course naturally reinforce one another. Aside from class discussions, the students will also be required to draw connections from all aspects of the statistical process when working on projects, particularly the final project of the course. These projects are discussed in more detail at the end of the syllabus.
 Communicate methods, results, and interpretations using the vocabulary of statistics – Students will be required to write frequently and will be expected to use appropriate statistical terminology. Students will be expected to write in complete sentences to communicate statistics concepts on homework assignments, tests, and projects. Students will also be required to present at least one of the required projects to the class and present and discuss their results using appropriate statistical terminology.
 Use graphing calculators and computers to enhance the development of statistical understanding through exploring and analyzing data, assessing models, and performing simulations – Students will use the graphing calculator throughout the course once concepts have been taught and discussed. Students will be expected to set up problems using the concepts from class and then use the calculator as a tool to solve what they have set up. The calculator will also be used to explore data in class as concepts are developed and to do simulations. Students will constantly use calculators to graph data when analyzing it and when checking conditions for inference. Students will also be frequently exposed to computer output, particularly in the form of summary statistics for a data set and for regression analysis. Students will be expected to interpret computer output for a data set and draw conclusions about that data based on the computer output on homework assignments, tests, and projects.
 The hours are based on a normal schedule. For block schedule, each day is ½ of a day.

One of the main goals of the AP Statistics course is for students to draw connections between all aspects of the statistical process. The beauty of the course is that all of the content taught throughout the year is truly interconnected; a solid understanding and communication of inference in the second semester depends upon a solid foundation in descriptive statistics, probability, and sampling in the first semester. Aside from constantly drawing students’ attention to these connections during class, projects are extremely helpful in solidifying the connections. Each project requires students to produce a written report that is graded using a rubric.
Our school is broken into six grading cycles, with each cycle lasting six weeks. Each grading cycle, students are required to complete a project reinforcing the current topic and connecting it to the entire course. While the specific details of the projects change from year to year to ensure students come up with their own unique project, the topics for the projects are the same. The project for the first grading cycle is focused on experimental design. This project requires students to design and implement an experiment and gather the associated data. The project for the second grading cycle is focused on interpreting graphical displays. This project requires the students to utilize data from the first project, create graphical displays, and analyze the data. The project for the third grading cycle is focused on probability with connections to graphical displays and experimental design. This project requires the students to explore a popular board game or card game and identify and explain where and how probability is utilized within that game. The project for the fourth grading cycle is focused on analyzing quantitative data and serves as a review of first semester topics at the same time as we are starting inference in class. This project requires the students to gather quantitative data, present it in several different graphical displays, analyze the data numerically, explain the connection between the graphical displays and the numerical interpretations, and explain their data collection methods. The project for the fifth grading cycle is focused on hypothesis testing and error analysis with connections to graphical displays and the experimental design process. This project requires the students to analyze a research article and discuss the author’s method of data collection, analysis of the data, and possible consequences of Type I and Type II errors in the context of the research question. For the sixth and final grading cycle, the project encompasses the entire statistical process from design to inference. Students are required to develop a question, gather data, organize and analyze the data, and apply inferential techniques to draw conclusions.
Resource Requirements:
This course will satisfy the following resource requirements:
 Each student will have a collegelevel statistics textbook for individual use, inside and outside of the classroom.
 Each student will have access to a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities.
 Each student will have access to a computer to aid in investigating and analyzing data and in exploring statistical models.
