I believe that the purpose of education is to empower all children to critically analyze the world the live in and to positively contribute to their communities. I believe that students learn best when they are respected, and the teacher creates an inclusive and safe learning environment. My role as an educator is not to fill students with information, but to work with them to explore, question, and challenge themselves and our community. It is my role to celebrate their own literacies and knowledges, and to encourage them to seek out and learn from other perspectives. I integrate technology to validate the experiences, lives, and cultures of all students through research and exploration. I recognize that my students have interacted with technology since their birth, but still require guidance in netiquette and mechanics. I firmly believe that every child is capable of learning, but that every child is an individual. Because of this understanding, I scaffold learning and use assistive technology to meet the needs of all my students.
In our class we will work to understand and critically analyze various texts through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We will use these texts to engage in productive and challenging conversations about the intersections of ourselves, our communities, and the health care/biotech field. I look forward to teaching and learning with all of you!
