UNCF STEM Scholarship Workshop
Tuesday, February 11th the College Readiness Dept. hosted for the first time the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) for an intimate scholarship workshop to support African-American students who will seek degrees in STEM. Director for Recruitment and Outreach, Mary Williams and Coordinator, Tanika Mangum flew in from Washington, DC to walk students through the scholarship and give specific details and examples of answers that would meet reviewer expectations as they compete with students from across the country. What an amazing opportunity for the HISD scholars who attended from Kashmere, Sterling, Washington, North Forest, HAIS, South Early, Worthing and Yates high schools! The UNCF informed us this was being done for only seven US cities, and they believed Houston ISD was an absolute must! Students were engaged, captured notes, and asked relevant questions to ensure they were on the right track to success. They left the session feeling they had an opportunity to actually win. The scholarships of up to $25,000 will also include internship opportunities, training, and a visit, if selected, to the nation’s capital all expenses paid. Thank you Dr. Lathan and Dr. Cruz for presenting this opportunity to the team!
