• Spanish III Pre-AP - Syllabus

     Carnegie Vanguard High School

    2020-2021

     Description

The Spanish III Pre-AP class provides the students the themes and tools to review and extend all the skills and basic grammar learned in levels 1 and 2 under a bigger spectrum of topics.  Students will strengthen their communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing under different situations and most of the time with the use of real sources in Spanish from publications, movies, newscast, radio broadcast, etc.

The class also provides the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of different cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries and populations.  This cultural approach allows the students to make interdisciplinary connections with other subjects such as History, Art, Literature, Music, Geography, etc.

Finally, through the acquisition of the Spanish Language, students will have the chance to explore how they may use Spanish in the future either for personal enjoyment or as a tool to open more professional opportunities.

    Goals (*)

    • Communication:  The student communicates in Spanish using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
    • Cultures:  The student gains knowledge and understanding of Hispanic culture.
    • Connections: The student uses Spanish to make connections with other subject areas and acquired information.
    •  Comparisons:  The student develops insight into the nature of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture by comparing the student’s own language and culture to another.
    • Communities: The student participates in their own community and around the world using the Spanish language.

(*)  These goals are the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for LOTE (Languages Other Than English) intermediate level.

Homework will be assigned almost every day.  Homework is always checked and corrected in class.  Complete homework with corrections will get 100.

    Classwork:
Includes any individual, group or activity done during instructional time: vocabulary forms in OneNote, cloze lines, games, videos, role plays, notes, culture activities, online activities, etc. Students have until 11:59 pm to submit their work.

    Quizzes:
Quizzes will be online through the HUB.  Students will take a quiz after each lesson. Each unit has two lessons.

    Projects:
Students may have one project per thematic unit.

    Exams:
One comprehensive exam will be given at the end of each unit.  The exam has two main sections: multiple choice (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, and culture = 70%), and open answer section (writing and speaking = 30%).

    Activities online - REPASOS:

    1.    “REPASOS” are reviews designed with the purpose to give the students the opportunity to study and practice new Spanish topics outside the classroom.  There are two “REPASOS” per lesson: one for vocabulary and another for grammar.  They are also used by the teacher to identify weak points and to modify and/ or reteach material if it is necessary before a quiz or a test.  Usually every cycle has between six and seven reviews and they make up 15% of the overall class grade.

    2.    Students always have 5 days to work on the “REPASOS”.  They are usually, NOT ALWAYS, posted on Saturday mornings and the deadline for completion is on Wednesdays at 11:59 p.m. (midnight)

    3.    In order to complete the “REPASO” students may:

    - Use their textbook and notes.
    - Work SIMULTANEOUSLY with other students.
    - Work with a tutor.
    - Contact me in case of questions or technical difficulties.
    - Students are welcome to come during office hours to work in their REPASOS.  They may come individually or in groups.  - - -Usually, I try to check their REPASOS and point out any mistakes to the students, so they can make the appropriate corrections before they submit it.

    4.    After the deadline of each “REPASO”, the “teacher’s key” will appear on the screen so they can go over and target any weaknesses they may have with the material.  The use of this key to copy, review, or finish the REPASOS before submission or due date will be considered cheating and it will have as a consequence a disciplinary action.
