• 2024-2025 Classical Guitar Audition Requirements

The Kinder HSPVA Classical Guitar Department is designed for solo and ensemble performance.  The repertoire will come from Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern guitar repertoire.  Our goal is to enhance the technical skills, scholarly knowledge, and musical faculties of each of our students to produce the most nurturing and productive guitar performance environment possible.

The guitar curriculum is designed as a four-year course in music study which will increase musical and technical challenges as the student progresses.

The relatively small size of our department allows for a high degree of individual attention and small class sizes (the average guitar class has 6-12 students), which greatly facilitates meaningful learning and instruction.

Guitar students at HSPVA are strongly encouraged to have a private instructor. Our program does not displace the role of the private instructor, it reinforces it. Should your child have a private instructor, our program seeks to elaborate on the work of the private teacher and to fill in whatever educational gaps the one-hour weekly guitar lesson necessarily produces. The private instructor’s musical interpretation and methods will be respected at all times. If a student does not have a private instructor, the department will work with the student to richly enhance their musical skills and find potential opportunities to connect with private teachers.

Many of our HSPVA music students choose to go on to pursue their post-high school studies at the most prestigious music schools and conservatories in the country – schools like The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, the Eastman School of Music, the Moores and Shepherd Schools of Music, among others.  Students post high-school choice of field of study whether it is in music or in another field will always be respected.

    When are auditions and callbacks?

The first stage of auditions for the 2024-25 school year will be virtual.

    • Each video should be approximately 60 seconds
    • Audio only recordings will not be accepted.
    • Please choose those 2 pieces from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Modern guitar repertoire.
    • Play contrasting pieces for each video (example: 1 video of a S. American excerpt and another video of a Baroque excerpt)
