30-Minute Talks is a division of the HISD Speakers Bureau designed to provide opportunities for professionals of all backgrounds to visit classrooms and describe their careers and the paths they’ve taken to achieve success.
In speaking with educators and business leaders, it was evident that a lack of exposure to career and educational opportunities is a barrier to student achievement. It was also evident that professionals throughout Houston were eager to volunteer in a program that is effective and requires a limited time commitment. 30-Minute Talks is designed to meet the needs of volunteers for a focused commitment while broadening the horizons of students and enriching the curriculum offered by HISD schools.
As the name indicates, the goal of 30-Minute Talks is to provide focused opportunities for interaction with students that fit within the rhythm of the school day and the schedules of our volunteers. 30-Minute Talks presentations are intended to supplement the curriculum in order to bring subjects and career opportunities to life. Presentations may be incorporated into lesson plans addressing particular subjects or offered as part of a career day. We anticipate that other opportunities for presentations will arise as principals and teachers discover new ways to incorporate the 30-Minute Talks program into their school days.
