The Theatre Department at Lamar High School continues to create opportunities for a varied group of students interested in the Theatre Arts. Courses offer a general background in theatre both as a performance and technical art.
With approximately 200 students, Theatre 1 is an overall survey of all the elements that make up a theatre production. In Theatre 1, the student will explore basic acting techniques, stage terminology, introductory technical theatre skills, and be exposed to the wonderful history and literature of the art of theatre.
Theatre 2 is an advanced theatre course where students continue to develop and refine their acting skills through varied classroom activities. With approximately 25 students, this class produces two performances a year.
Technical theatre students will learn hands on about the varied theatre arts of set design, lighting, sound, costumes, and make up. Students in this class will support the productions produced by the Loading Dock Production Company. Technical Theatre Course overview: This course is a general overview of the art form of technical theatre. The course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of technical theatre techniques, technical terms, and responsibilities, and audience appreciation of the art form of theatre. Areas of study include set design and construction, lighting and sound, costuming, makeup, and publicity. Pre-requisite: Theatre I. An application with teacher approval is required.
IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) Theatre is a class that takes an intense look at the living art form of theatre. In this class, students will explore theatre traditions from non-European cultures and trace how they influence American modern theatre. We will also explore the theories of Stanislavski, Aristotle and many other theatre theorists. Students in this class will be expected to sit for the IB exam in theatre and complete a portfolio of a body of work demonstrating continued growth in their chosen emphasis. IBDP Theatre students get an opportunity to design or direct public performances.
In the Loading Dock Production Company (LDP) the students will take on all the many responsibilities of theatre productions. Students will act or work on a crew at least one performance in the fall and one in the spring. They will also make up the company that performs in the UIL One-Act Play competition in which Lamar has quite a long-standing successful history. In the past 5 years, LDP has competed and advanced to the Area UIL OAP contest and last spring to the Regional contest, winning numerous acting awards and Best Tech Crew two year in a row. Students have competed and won scholarships at the Texas Thespians Festival and Tommy Tune Awards. Entrance into the Theatre Production and Technical Theatre classes are by audition only.
