Ms. Riordan, Spanish

deirdre.riordan@houstonisd.org

Room: C-142

I am very excited for my third year at Pin Oak!

I'm fascinated by the Spanish language and cultures. I learned Spanish in Benissa, Spain at a local elementary school. Later, when I moved to Texas I continued studying the language and literature at the high school and college levels. At Trinity University in San Antonio, Spanish was one of my majors. I also had the opportunity in college to attend the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After college, I moved to Guanajuato, Mexico and taught at the Universidad de Celaya. Finally, I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and I am currently studying a doctorate at the University of Houston. I speak Spanish at home with my son and we enjoyed a vacation in Spain this past summer.

Mr. Jones, German

Tag, und Willkommen in die Welt der deutschen Sprache!

I am Herr Jones and I started learning German long before most of your parents were even born - so long ago that at that time, there were actually still two Germanys in existence!

I enjoy so many things about German and the German-speaking world that will be fun to learn about in class. The language can be surprisingly close to English. (Any idea what Hand, Arm and Finger might mean? Or Fisch, Katze, or Elefant?) German cars are cool and fast. German breads and pastries are unlike any in the rest of the world. The German economy is the largest in Europe. And Germans are at the forefront of environmental consciousness. Did you know that Volkswagens and Mercedes are German? Or that Gummi Bears and Ritter Sport originated in Germany? How about Bayer Aspirin? Or Pumas and Adidas? What’s more, if you speak German you can be understood in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and, believe it or not, Namibia!

Take German! You won’t regret it!

Ms. Sarah Fumo Grignano

Ciao, my name is Ms. Fumo! I am so excited to be teaching Italian at POMS this year! I grew up in a perfectly bilingual home; my mom American and my father Italian. This is most definitely where my passion for languages began! I was raised in Trapani, Sicily where I attended a specialized language high school and focused on Italian, French, German and Latin.
I went on to pursue my interest in cultures and languages by obtaining a BA in Linguistic Mediation at the University of Turin along with a Master’s in International Science and Human Rights.
In 2011, I moved to the United States and began tutoring and teaching Italian in person and via Skype.
I have experience teaching all different levels of Italian; from beginner classes to advanced conversation, I also have extended experience working with children and love to incorporate fun facts about Italian culture, cuisine, art and travel in to my lessons!
