HISD has been an open-choice district for more than 40 years. This means that students are not limited to their neighborhood — or zoned — schools, but may apply to the district’s many magnet programs. These include language-immersion schools, Vanguard/GT schools, STEM programs, Montessori, International Baccalaureate, dual language, fine arts, and more. For a complete list of magnet programs, details on how to apply, and deadlines, please see HISD School Choice.

Magnet Wharton 2018 - 2019
Magnet Information for Wharton PK-8 Dual Language Academy 2018-2019
Thank you for your interest in our school. We are a magnet school for the Dual Language Program and the first school-wide, PK - 8th grade, Dual Language Magnet Program in HISD. Our school follows the full immersion program (80:20). Students develop initial literacy in Spanish and our lower grades receive the majority of their instruction in Spanish. Each year, English time increases by 10% until 4th grade where there is a balance of 50% English and 50% Spanish.
Anyone interested in learning more about our magnet program is welcome to attend campus tours on the following dates, all tours start at 9 a.m.:
For additional information, call the HISD Office of School Choice at 713-556-6947 or visit the HISD School of Choice website.
Pre-KindergartenOur PK students have the advantage of receiving instruction for half a day in Spanish and half a day in English. We integrate our Spanish and English speaking children in the classroom. Students who apply and list Spanish as their native language will take the district oral language assessment test to determine the dominant language of the student. If you are applying to multiple dual language magnet programs, this assessment only needs to be taken once. Please notify the school if you have already taken the assessment with another elementary school so we can call and get the score from the other school.
In HISD, there is no zone for PK students. All PK students must apply for magnet seats. Students must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2019 to apply for an HISD PK program.
Our Kindergarten students follow the full 80:20 immersion model with 80% of their instruction in Spanish. All ancillary classes, PE, Art, Library and Technology, are in English.
There are no prerequisites for students applying for Kindergarten magnet. Students who apply and list Spanish as their native language will take the district oral language assessment test to determine the dominant language of the student. If you are applying to multiple dual language magnet programs, this assessment only needs to be taken once. Please notify the school if you have already taken the assessment with another elementary school so we can call and obtain the score from the other school.
There is a zone for Kindergarten students. Please see the district zoning maps if you have a question about your school zone. If you are zoned to Wharton, please contact the school registrar, Liz Cortez. Zoned students do not need to apply for magnet seats, but it is helpful if you do apply marking us as your 5th choice so the school knows to expect your kindergarten student for the next school year. Students must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2019 to apply/enroll for an HISD Kindergarten program.
1st - 5th Grade
As the students move up in academic years, the amount of instruction in English increases by 10%.
New students, zoned and magnet applicants, must have prior Dual Language/Spanish academic experience. *Currently enrolled magnet K-4th students do not need to reapply each year.
Our middle school program offers a rigorous college preparatory program while continuing to develop high level academic Spanish. By the end of 8th grade, students complete the foreign language requirement for the HISD Recommended High School Diploma and have the opportunity to earn four high school credits including Algebra I and one college credit through the AP Spanish exam.
There is no zone for our middle school, it is 100% magnet middle school. Everyone must apply including current 5th grade Wharton students.
6th graders must apply to our middle school and must show previous Dual Language academic experience. Wharton 5th graders must apply to enter the Wharton 6th grade middle school magnet lottery. 6th graders take World Cultures in Spanish. They will also take Pre-AP math which is a combination of 6th and 7th grade math.

Liz Cortez, Registrar & Magnet Clerk*HISD Board Policy on Zoned Magnet StudentsZoned magnet students that move out of the Magnet school's attendance zone and who remain in the HISD district during the school year, may remain at their campus until the end of the semester. 5th, 8th and 12th grade students may remain until the end of the school year.
