Present Time Kids™ at Travis Elementary

"I am calm, I am focused, I am ready to learn."

Travis Elementary implements Present Time Kids™ (PTK), a cutting-edge, science-based mindfulness program developed by holistic health professionals Heather Goodwin (a Travis parent) and Cheryl Hensley.

Stress triggers the brain's amygdala to fire, resulting in higher cortisol levels. Cortisol destroys memory cells in the hippocampus, impairing learning ability. Strengthening the brain's prefrontal cortex improves problem solving, decision making, and emotional regulation, thereby enhancing learning ability.

PTK blends the latest neuroscience findings and the practice of mindfulness into one simple and effective program to help teachers and students achieve calm, focus, and readiness to learn every day.

    The overarching message: “Be present.”

Students are guided to move into Present Body – a still, quiet, body. By using the image of a strong tree, the circuitry between the mind and body is ignited. The body's still, quiet form sends a powerful message to the child's brain to calmly engage in the present moment.

From Present Body, students are guided to use Present Listening – listening on purpose from the beginning to the end. When students use Present Listening, they use more than their physical ears. They use their minds to think about what is being said, focus their attention with their eyes and ears, and show respect by listening empathetically with their hearts.

The teacher leads the students in three suggestions: “I am calm, I am focused, I am ready to learn.” Then four simple exercises follow: Cross Connect, Pause Buttons, Belly Breathing, and Mindful Minute. Children end the session centered, calm, and engaged with the learning environment.

Every day, children face a range of distractions and stress. Stress triggers the brain's amygdala to fire, resulting in higher cortisol levels. Cortisol destroys memory cells in the hippocampus, impairing learning ability. PTK quiets the cortisol production and calms the amygdala while strengthening the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Strengthening the brain's PFC improves executive functions such as problem solving, decision making, and emotional regulation, thereby enhancing learning ability. The unique exercises within PTK encourage brain neural pathway to wire towards calmness and focus, assists the nervous system to find balance/coherence and primes the individual's physiology for learning.
