M. M. Perez

MM Perez's family settled in San Antonio, Texas from the Canary Islands in 1713. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at San Antonio where he received his Masters and Bachelors degrees. After moving to Houston he became a certified teacher through the Houston ISD Alternative Certification Program and St. Thomas University. Perez has taught for 25 years in Houston ISD at Deady and Tanglewood Middle Schools. He is currently teaching the IB Middle Years Program Year 1 (sixth grade) Sciences course and is the sponsor of the Tanglewood Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Last July he co-presented "Jumping the Dragon's Gate: Experience, Contexts, Career Pathways, and Professional Identity" at the 12th international conference on Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP) at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, UK. Perez has been a part of the Portfolio Group, a teacher action research group who have been researching their individual and collective teacher practices for the past 20 years. In the past the Portfolio Group has presented their research at many international and academic conferences. His favorite authors include Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Gunter Grass and Jo Nesbo. Some of his favorite musicians are Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Yoko Ono, Jefferson Airplane and the Beatles. Perez is an avid gardner of plumeria (frangipani) and ferns. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and parts of western Europe. He speaks English, Spanish and French, and reads some Latin. Perez shares his home with his spouse and four cats.
