Ms. Velda Hunter

Greetings! This is my 18th year at Yates High School and my 37th year as an educator.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Education (with specializations in English, Elementary, and Early Childhood) from The University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and a M. Ed in Curriculum and Instruction (minors in Gifted and Talented and Gender Studies) from UT in 1991.  I  attended and received certifications from University of Houston (Art, African American Studies, and Community Media), University of Houston Clear Lake (Library Science), and Rice University (Biochemistry and Cell Biology).

I have taught in Austin ISD, Oklahoma City Catholic Schools, Houston ISD, and Rice University.  As a classroom teacher, I have taught every grade from Pre-Kindergarten to the eighth grade and I have taught graduate school.   I am a judge for Elementary and Secondary University Interscholastic League, as well as  Middle School and High School Debate. My work experience also includes elementary, middle, and high school librarian. Currently,  I am a librarian for the Astros Literacy Foundation.

This year, I am the campus test coordinator.  I am also the sponsor of several clubs and teams, including Name That Book Team, Anime and Cosplay, Comic Book Club, Chess, Maker, Poetry, Student Council, and Silent Reading.

I am currently reading Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam and Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu.
