Degrees and Certifications:

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!  I am both honored and excited to have the opportunity to teach your child how to become a global citizen who is a skilled reader.  This year there will be many opportunities for learning including classwork, homework, and after school tutorials.  In addition, students will have access to our school library, computer labs, and computer carts.  To this end, your child will need the following supplies as soon as possible:

  • 1 – 3” Large Binder (this will stay in the classroom)
  • 2 packs of notebook paper
  • 1 set of dividers
  • Pencil pouch
  • Pens/pencils
  • 2 glue sticks
  • 1 pack of colored pencils
  • 2 Highlighters
  • 1 Set wide markers (for group work posters)
  • FLASH DRIVE ( one flash drive will cover all classes)

There will be six units of study which will be genre based:  LITERARY NON-FICTION, EXPOSITORY NON-FICTION, FICTION, PERSUASION, LITERARY ANALYSIS, and POETRY.  In addition, students will always be reading a novel or expository text of their choice as part of their independent reading.  All students will be expected to complete at least 20 minutes of independent reading at home every evening.  Additional homework will be given based on the lesson of the day.  Parents and students will be able to monitor grades via Gradespeed located on the parent page of the HISD website.

If you need to reach me for any reason, my e-mail is nkerensk@houstonisd.org.  Together, we can make this a rewarding year of growth and learning for your child.  Thank you for your efforts, and I look forward to meeting you soon.
