Mr. Woods

Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Leaders and Business Partners,

I certainly hope you have had a relaxing and refreshing summer! As we embark on another school year, I am reflective on the amazing community, parents, and student body at Burrus Elementary. It is through your commitment to education and never-ending support that this campus is able to experience such tremendous success. Having served in the Houston Independent School District for nearly 40 years, 20 of which have been here at Burrus, I am confident in the high level of instruction and remarkable programs we provide for our students.

As the Principal, I am honored to lead a dedicated team of teachers and staff who go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that Burrus is a positive learning environment where students feel safe, believe in themselves, and can achieve. Through our STEM emphasis, Global/VIF initiative, Dual Language program, and our Fine Arts program it is our goal at Burrus Elementary to continue to provide rigorous instruction.  Instruction that prepares our students for the college arena and the demands of the 21st century work place.

I look forward to meeting and welcoming our incoming students and parents, as well as our returning members of the Burrus family. I encourage you to attend Open House and participate in our numerous Fine Arts Magnet events, Literacy by 3, S.T.E.M. Night (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), DARE TO DREAM, and many more clubs and activities that will we will be hosting this school year. I want to extend a very special thanks to the Barbara Bush Foundation and Neil Bush for the beautiful outdoors Science Garden, Volunteers Veterans, and Manuel Rodriguez, President of the HoustonISD School Board. The dedication of the new outdoor garden/classroom was well attended, with Vice President Diana Davila, Trustee of the HoustonISD School Board as the guest speaker. She was graciously introduced by our own Trustee II Rhonda Skillern – Jones, and a special thank you came from our own Chief of the North Region, Dr. Grenita Lathan.

I would like to give a special shout out to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders for a job well done! Thanks to their hard work and dedication, Burrus has met all standards for the 2015-2016 Accountability school year. Parents, guardians, and all members of the Independent Heights Community we cannot thank you enough. We would also like to thank Trustee II School Board Member, Mrs. Rhonda Skillern-Jones for her continued support to our school and this community!  Additional thanks to Pastor George T Curry, President of the Independent Heights Greater Houston Ministerial Alliance and Rev. Ray Mackey, Community Accountability Chair for the Greater Houston Ministerial Alliance for the great work that they are doing in order to preserve Burrus Elementary Magnet Fine Arts continued legacy as a historical educational institution.

Again, thank you for your continued support and welcome to James D. Burrus Fine Arts Magnet School!

    Respectfully yours,

    Jessie Woods, Principal
