    Breaking Barriers in History

Houston ISD National History Day

  • HISD Innovation & Postsecondary Programming is excited to coordinate the district's National History Day (NHD) competition. NHD gives students in grades K through 12 the opportunity to act as historians. HISD Social Studies teachers and students are encouraged to incorporate NHD components into their teaching. NHD expectations strongly align with HISD disciplinary practices. For example, primary document analysis is a critical component in NHD, Social Studies TEKS, IB, and AP Social Studies. Research expresses that NHD students “outperform their non-NHD peers on state standardized tests in multiple subjects…” (NHD Executive Summary).

Our HISD History Day competition will take place on February 22, 2020 at Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk (2805 Garrow St, Houston, TX 77003). If your school would like to participate in or learn more about our HISD History Day competition, please contact Bonnie Arango and visit nhd.org. She will guide you and your team through the very rewarding research and presentation expectations. Be sure to view our History Day fundamentals in our History Day folder.

Registration for our February 22 event opens on January 10, 2020. Please register using this link: https://tx-hisd.nhd.org/. Registration closes on February 13, 2020 at 11:59 PM.
